Drottningholm Palace
Drottningholm Palace is included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This is the best-preserved royal palace in Sweden, built in the 17th century.
Together with the exotic building of the Chinese Pavilion, the palace theater and the luxurious park, the palace complex forms a unique integral composition.
The castle was built in the French style by the architect Nicodemus Tessin senior, commissioned by Queen Hedwiga Eleanor. Since then, many royals have left their mark on it.
The royal family moved to Drottningholm in 1981. Today, the palace is the permanent residence of the king and queen. They occupy rooms in the southern part, however, most of the palace and park are open to visitors all year round.
Gripsholm Castle
Gripsholm Castle keeps memories of four centuries of history. The castle was built as the representative residence of the monarch Gustav Vasa in the 16th century.
The Great Throne Room captured the original atmosphere of Gripsholm.
The most famous 16th century chateau in the castle is the Duke Karl's bedchamber, which is one of the best-preserved examples of interiors from that era.
During the Swedish Empire, Gripsholm served as the residence of Queen Dowager Maria Eleonore (widow of Gustav II Adolf) and Gedwig Eleonore (widow of Karl X).
The castle experienced a new period of prosperity during the reign of Gustav III in the 18th century. Then an extraordinary castle theater was built in one of the Renaissance towers. It is one of the best preserved 18th century theaters in Europe.
In the 19th century, Gripsholm Castle awakened strong national feelings and became considered a national monument.
The castle is also world renowned for the unique collection of portraits of prominent personalities from the time of Gustav Vasa to the present day - the National Portrait Gallery of Sweden.
